Wind Songs
 
I had many beautiful visions while creating this flute and completed her in almost one sitting. Outside there was a strong wind blowing and I felt from the very beginning that this flute would be very connected to that invisible and very powerful force of Mother Earth. Yet what can be so destructive can also be so gentle. Our own breath is like the lightest of breezes and it is with this breath that we make the songs that come from within ourselves and are inspired but all that is around us. This flute has a playful voice like leaves dancing upon the wind. She sings with a strong clear voice that has an ancient resonance to it. One of the visions I had while creating this flute was standing upon a great cliff overlooking a vast desert. The sun was setting and the sky was red and blue. There was a great storm in the far distance and lightning flashed brightly within the billowing clouds. The air was hot and as the wind brushed my skin I felt warm and comfortable and light. I saw myself playing this flute and my song was to this approaching storm. It was a song of thanks and respect. The melody flew across the sky to the very heart of this storm and swirled within its beauty. In honour of that vision and breath and wind I have named this flute Wind Songs. I hope her songs will travel always to the infinite reaches of the universe upon the breath of all those who play her.
 
She is in the key of A4 at 432Hz and is 51cm (20”). She is made of black bamboo and I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. The stone settings in the body are of Turquoise. She has 6 finger holes and is tuned to a pentatonic minor scale.The Totem is made from Cherry and has eyes of Turquoise. The wood was collected in the forest by my father to make his own beautiful objects. It is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide. Finger hole #4 is also covered with the same lace. This can be slid up and down at any time to change this flute between a 5 hole and 6 hole configuration.The red lashing is of waxed cotton whipping cord and the natural colour lashing at either end is artificial sinew. The feathers are tied on with leather cord and they are from Red Kite and Magpie which as always were found while I am out with Mother Nature..
