Sunlight Dancing

This flute began life in upstate New York earlier this year at a secluded cabin where I spent the winter creating flutes. Mother Earth would often show her wildness especially out on the frozen lake nearby as winter storms would turn the landscape and air completely white with blowing snow. On one of these days I walked out on the ice just as the storm was passing. Normally the snow on the lake was quite deep but on this day the strong winds had blown much of the it into the sky uncovering the clear ice below. The sun began to shine so brightly and as he did swirls of snow, like little tornados would rise high into the sky and dance with such grace across this beautiful frozen wilderness. What I felt and witnessed that afternoon was the inspiration for this flute. I began work on her that evening and when she sang her first song it so reminded me of what I had seen on the lake that day. She sings with a crystal clear voice that is light and sparkles with joy. I have named her Sunlight Dancing and the intent I felt as I crafted her is to spread light and happiness to all who play and hear her.

She is in the key of B at 432Hz and is 40cm (16”). She is made of black bamboo and I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. She has 6 finger holes and is tuned to a pentatonic minor scale. The Totem is made from Locust which has been collected in the forest by my father to make his own beautiful objects. It is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide. Finger hole #4 is also covered with the same lace. This can be removed or replaced at any time to change this flute between a 5 hole and 6 hole configuration. The blue and Red lashing is of waxed cotton whipping cord and the natural colour lashing is artificial sinew.
