Spirit Songs
This flute is about connecting with Spirit and The Ancestors. The place of her birth is Ebbor Gorge in Somerset on the Mendips. Our Ancestors have lived with this land for about 450,000 years although not continuously due to ice ages. It was about 60,000 years ago that Neanderthal Humans came to this area and it is those peoples that this flute is inspired from. This is the second flute I have made here and each time I have asked for guidance about every aspect of creating these instruments and I have been shown so much. Hazel and Elder are so plentiful here and the peoples who lived here then would know these trees very well. The wood is so amazing to work with is always so beautiful. The voice of this flute calls to the Spirits of this land. Her voice is clear yet airy and sounds at times to be more at home in the realms of these Spirits. She certainly feels and sings to me like a flute made many thousands of years ago. Each flute I make from here teaches me so much and I look forward to creating more in the future. I hope the songs you play together with shine with pure light and invite the guidance of those of the Spirits Worlds as you journey on your path. I have named this flute Spirit Songs.
She is in the key of F# tuned to 432Hz and is 31cm (12”). She is made of Hazel that I foraged from Ebbor Gorge in Somerset. I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. The block is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide. The lashing at each end is artificial sinew and the feathers are Buzzard which as always were found while I am walking with Mother Nature or gifted to me by friends.
