Little Bird in Snow

Little Bird in Snow

This flute was created during my winter stay in a cabin in upstate New York. While out walking one day I saw the bright red flash of a Cardinal fly between the trees  and into a clearing ahead of me. I sat down at the edge of the clearing and watched this magnificent bird as he danced about on the snow covered ground. Every so often he would fly to one of the trees near the edge of the clearing and begin to sing. I had a little flute with me much like this one and I started to sing some songs with her to this little bird. He repeated the same pattern of dancing on the snow and then singing in the tree. Often while he was on the snow and I was playing he would stop and be still while looking over to me and I would send him my gratitude for his presence and beautiful songs. If it wasn’t so cold outside I could have stayed there all day. When I returned back the cabin I started to craft this flute right away being inspired by this beautiful Cardinal and our time together. My intent for this flute is that she will sing freely like a bird where ever she goes and her songs will fly to the heavens. I have named her Little Bird in Snow

She is in the key of E5 at 432Hz and is 290cm (11 1/2”). She is made of natural bamboo and I use a combination of sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. She has 5 finger holes and is tuned to a pentatonic minor scale. The Totem is made from Locust which has been collected in the forest by my father to make his own beautiful objects. It is held in place with leather lace from cow hide. The blue and beige lashing is of waxed cotton whipping cord and the natural colour lashing is artificial sinew.
