Inner Beauty

There is beauty everywhere. Often it’s not apparent from just looking on the outside. Sometimes we need to look within. This flute began her life as a branch from a Birch tree that had been blown over by the wind. It was sad to see this amazing tree laying upon the Earth instead of dancing upright in the breeze. I explained to the tree, as is my custom, that I would like to use some branches to create flutes. I found a few pieces and gave many thanks to this tree and wished him well upon his journey from this life to the next. A year later having chosen one of these branches to be the this flute I sat with the branch for awhile and remembered when I first came across the tree. It was at that moment that the name of this flute came to me. Each flute I create always begins with inspiration from what is around me as well as from what is within me, and within me that place is my heart. No matter what is going on in the world around me there is always a place within my heart that is beauty. Even if my heart is sad which of course happens from time to time there is a fire there that always burns on and shines brightly. I know I can always go there and sit around that fire and feel Love and Joy. Once I am there and connected with my heart, I am connected with everything. The Sky, The Earth, The Rocks, Rivers and Forests. The Oceans and the Wind. All the beings that live here with Mother Earth. The Birds, the Water Beings, The Serpents, The Insects and Spiders, The 4 legged, the 2 legged ones and many more. From that place beauty is everywhere. It is in the love that connects all. As I began to work with this branch, removing the outer bark I knew the name was perfect. This branch became even more beautiful as each new layer was revealed and when she sang her first song I felt that beauty shine within my heart. In honour of the love that shines within everything this flute is named Inner Beauty.

She is in the key of G tuned to 432Hz and is 54cm (21”).  I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. This flute has 5 finger holes. The stone inlays are green Malachite representing the beauty of Mother Earth. The block is made of Beech that I foraged from a forest near by and is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide and has Turquoise eyes. The lashing around the body to the flute artificial sinew and the feathers are Buzzard and Barn Owl which as always were found while I am walking with Mother Nature or gifted to me by friends.
