Deep Roots Wisdom
 
I collected the wood for this flute from a forest nearby my workshop in the U.K. It is Red Cedar which isn’t native to this land and I am grateful that these magnificent trees are growing so close to me as they have been used to make Native American flutes for many years. This flute is inspired by the what the forest teaches us when we just slow down and open ourselves up to the wisdom of trees. The forest is a community and within it each plant, animal and  insect has a part to play. As a human walking for a couple hours through this community all seems very slow and unchanging except for maybe the trees swaying in the wind. But in actual fact there is much going on here all the time. I have found the best way to experience this is to either climb a tree or to get down close to the forest floor. There is much going on in both places. There is constant communication between the highest leaves in the canopy to the deepest roots far underground. That communication also travels for miles in every direction. I often ask the forest to guide me to the wood for my next flute. I do this by sending my own roots, the roots of my Soul down into the Earth. That connection is always so powerful and each time I am guided on a path filled with wonder and learning as I come to find the perfect piece of wood. I am always grateful for this incredible connection and for the wisdom of the community that is Forest. The wood for this flute was found just like this and in honour of all forest communities I name this flute Deep Roots Wisdom
 
He is in the key of D tuned to 432Hz and is made of Red Cedar. I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. The block is made of Walnut that my Dad collected in America. It is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide and has eyes of turquoise. The lashing at each end is artificial sinew and green and tan waxed twine. The feathers are Barn Owl and Barred Owl which as always were found while I am walking with Mother Nature or gifted to me by friends.
