2 Kites Dancing
Red Kites once almost extinct in the UK were re-introduced in the 1990’s and they are now thankfully thriving. There are many where I live and I feel blessed to see them soaring gracefully overhead each day. On the day I created this flute there were 2 young Kites playing in the sky above me. Having already chosen the piece of cane for this flute I sat with it in my lap and watched these magnificent birds. They would circle around many times and then come racing at lightning speed towards each other at the centre. In the last moment before crashing they would turn and barely miss each other and then just as quickly return to their circling of one another. Again and again they repeated this. Then one time instead of turning to miss each other the both put their feet forward connected, locking talons. They spun round and round falling towards the Earth, each of them calling to one another. They released before hitting the ground and ever so gracefully arced together up into the sky and back to circling each other. The Red Kite helps to teach us visionary power and clear sight. To tune into our intuition and move through life with finesse and grace. These beautiful birds and their dance we're the inspiration for this flute. It is my hope that her songs will help those who play and hear them to see their path with clarity and walk upon this Earth with beauty and grace. In honour of these magnificent birds and all that they teach us I name this flute 2 Kites Dancing
She is in the key of A tuned to 432Hz and is 49cm (19”). Made from natural mottled bamboo, I use a combination of burning, sanding and polishing which gives each of these flutes a wonderful smooth finish and unique colour pattern. The stone inlay is Red Jasper representing the magnificence of Red Kite. The block is made of Maple hat my Dad foraged in Upstate New York and is held in place with leather lace from North American Whitetail Deer hide and has Turquoise eyes. The lashing around the body of the flute is artificial sinew and red cotton twine. The feathers are Crow and Red Kite which as always were found while I am walking with Mother Nature or gifted to me by friends.
