Creating a Native American style flute for me is not just a craft; it is a profound journey of connection and intention. Each flute tells a unique story, shaped by the materials, the environment, and the intentions of both the maker and the future guardian. This post explores my process of crafting these flutes, emphasising the importance of collaboration and the wisdom of Mother Earth.

The journey begins with the commissioning process, where I closely collaborate with the person who will receive the flute. For instance, if the person expresses a desire for a flute that symbolises healing, then this intention will be woven into the flute through the whole creation process. By having open, meaningful conversations, we create a flute together that embodies the essence of the individual's aspirations and needs.
Crafting a flute involves more than just physical creation; it requires tuning into nature's signs. When entering a forest to find the right wood, I pay attention to my surroundings. For example, if I am drawn to a bird singing in the forest I will follow that song and often will find the perfect piece of wood for the flute. Nature communicates in so many ways and for me is vital in shaping the instrument's journey and voice.
Once the wood is selected, the crafting begins. Before I begin shaping the each flute I once again connect with the intentions for the flute and as the process unfolds the magic contiues to flow. This stage is filled with quiet mindfulness. Every cut, burn and carve is made with purpose, allowing the flute to evolve as an expression of both myself and the future guardian.
Once the flute is completed I return to Nature with him or her and play some songs and prayers of gratitude to Mother Earth and reflect on my journey. (Yes, I do feel these flutes have genders.) Every flute has a creation story that details my own journey's feelings during the crafting. This narrative serves as a way to build a bridge between the maker and the guardian. Whatever I am feeling and experiencing becomes part of the flute’s memory and I feel its important for the guardian to be aware of this and how it s woven into the flute together with their intentions. I also give names to all the flutes that reflects their creation story, personality and presence of the insrtument.
Listening to the wisdom of Mother Earth remains a guiding principle throughout the creation process. This connection is what in part what makes each flute truly unique. Mother Earth is sharing her wisdom all the time and if we wish to carry this wisdom we must learn to listen with our hearts and with gratitude. This was one of the most important things my mentor and friend shared with me over 30 years ago. (More on that in another blog post!!!) This beautiful message has been a beacon for me in almost every part of my life and weaving the stories and wisdom of Mother Earth into each flute is such an honour and really does in my opinion help to create the unique voice of each flute. They are not just instruments. They are healing tools a physical expression of the stories and intentions that shape our lives.
